When planning a trip to Europe for a Schengen visa, many applicants assume that the first step is going directly to the embassy. In most cases, that is no longer accurate.

Today, most Schengen embassies rely on official outsourced Visa Application Centers (VACs) to receive applications. These centers do not issue the visa themselves. Their role is administrative: they collect your passport and documents, handle biometrics, and forward the file to the relevant consulate or embassy. The final approval or refusal decision always belongs to the embassy.

The most common visa service providers worldwide are:

  • VFS Global: the largest partner for a very large number of embassies.
  • TLScontact: an official provider for major destinations such as France and Germany in some countries.
  • BLS International: a key visa partner for Spain in many jurisdictions.
Important note: the approved provider changes depending on both your country of residence and your destination country. The guide below lists the current official booking channel for each country covered here.

4 Golden Tips Before Booking

  • 1. The center does not issue the visa: the VAC is an administrative processing point only. The decision remains with the embassy or consulate.
  • 2. Avoid brokers and fake links: use the official websites listed above for booking and status tracking.
  • 3. Check consular representation: in some countries, one Schengen state may represent another if there is no direct diplomatic presence.
  • 4. Providers can change over time: embassies sometimes switch service partners, so always reconfirm the official provider before each application.
